Man jailed for blackmailing ex-lover
A MAN has been jailed for eight years after extorting 1.7 million yuan (US$249,000) from his former lover by threatening to publicize their extramarital affair more than 10 years ago.
Shanghai People's Procuratorate has upheld the verdict by Yangpu District People's Court and thrown out the man's appeal, today's Shanghai Morning Post reported.
Li, a department director of a local state-owned company, started an affair with the woman surnamed Wang in 1994 when her husband subcontracted a project for Li's company, the court said.
Their relationship ended in 1998 when the project was completed and Wang left the city along with her husband.
When Li heard Wang's husband had died in 2003, leaving his widow a rich woman, he began to blackmail Wang by threatening to expose their former relationship.
Wang called police after paying nearly all savings to Li, who lost most of the money in stock trading, the court said.
