Man leaves hand hurt to scam car owners
A MAN who pretended to be injured by a BMW car and pressured the driver into paying compensation of 200,000 yuan (US$32,076) has been arrested on extortion charges, Fengxian District prosecutors said yesterday.
The 33-year-old suspect, surnamed Xu, is alleged to have targeted the driver outside a bank, pretending to have been hit in his right hand as the victim, surnamed Zeng, gunned the engine one day in October. Xu demanded money from Zeng. Then Xu asked to go to the hospital. The exam showed Xu's hand was dislocated and needed to be set immediately.
Zeng pawned his car to get the money but realized he was taken in and reported the incident to police after he remembered his car had an alarm that would tell the driver if the car hit something.
Xu told prosecutors his right hand was injured and dislocated in an accident in 2010. He did not have it treated, using it to make money by faking car accidents.
