Man ran off with gold

AN unemployed man has been arrested for stealing gold jewelry from a store in Huangpu District, prosecutors said yesterday.

Shi Jingba, 33, tried on the items and then made a bolt for the door, said prosecutors with Huangpu District People's Procuratorate.

Shi went to a gold store in Yuyuan Garden on January 1 and told a shop assistant that he wanted to buy a gold ring, bracelet and necklace, prosecutors said.

After trying on the bracelet and necklace, he told the shop assistant to calculate the prices.

However, Shi, still wearing the jewelry, suddenly ran off. A security guard in the store grabbed Shi's collar but he escaped.

Shi was detained on January 7 at his temporary residence by city police who had identified his fingerprints.

The pieces were worth 49,000 yuan (US$7,444). Shi said he sold them for 30,000 yuan and spent the cash on himself and paying gambling debts.
