Man recipient of city's 600th successful cord blood transplant

A 43-YEAR-OLD man in Suzhou in neighboring Jiangsu Province received an umbilical cord blood transplant today, marking the 600th successful transplant for Shanghai Cord Blood Bank.

The patient has myelodysplastic syndrome, formerly known as pre-leukemia, a blood disease that occurs when the blood-forming cells in the bone marrow are damaged. A stem cell transplant is the only effective cure.

Since being established in 2004, the bank has collected over 40,000 umbilical cord blood units and over half of them are open for patients to search and use.

There are 30,000 to 40,000 people diagnosed with leukemia in the nation annually and half of them are children.
