A MAN was jailed yesterday for eight years for detonating homemade explosives at Pudong airport last June, injuring three people and disrupting flights.
Shanghai No.3 Intermediate People’s Court said Zhou Xingbai had been struggling with personal and romantic problems.
Zhou, a 30-year-old migrant worker from Guizhou Province, confessed he had become upset last May after his sister called him to say that their father was severely ill and blaming him for not caring for their parents.
He said he wanted to kill himself.
Zhou had bought fireworks in Kunshan City on June 9, removed the gunpowder and poured it into three empty beer bottles to create three explosive devices, the court said.
On June 12, he went to Pudong International Airport.
He had told the court he targeted Pudong because it would make a major international impact.
He arrived at the airport about 2:30pm, lit the explosives and threw them at passengers checking in.
Two of the devices exploded, injuring several travelers and causing flight cancellations and delays.
He tried to kill himself by slashing his neck afterwards.
Despite Zhou’s personal problems, the court said a psychological evaluation found no signs of mental illness.
Zhou’s punishment was severe because the incident occurred in a large public space, the court statement said.
In 2013, a wheelchair-bound man detonated a homemade bomb at Beijing International Airport. He was sentenced to six years in jail.
