Man to face charges over double killing 21 years ago

A MAN found living in a quiet Shanghai lane is to face charges over a robbery and double murder 21 years ago in neighboring Zhejiang Province, police said yesterday.

Ma Zhenhong was held in Putuo District last November and taken to Zhejiang. He had married in Shanghai and has a daughter, police said.

His wife, surnamed Zhang, said she knew little about Ma's past, and that he is a good husband.

Zhang revealed details of letters Ma sent from prison in which he tells her to "take care of his mother and daughter."

Over the past two decades, Ma had several driving jobs. He recently quit from a driving school where he worked as an instructor when he was held.

Ma now faces charges over a case in which a Zhejiang couple were found dead in their home on April 26, 1991. Their killers took 8,000 yuan (US$ 1,268) and left an eight-year-old boy tied up but unharmed.

Another man was held recently in connection with the incident.

People who knew Ma in recent years described him as a good worker who was quiet.

"You will have a promising future only if you study hard" Ma told his daughter in a letter.

"Help your mother with the housework and don't make her angry. The future road will be hard but hold on. Goodbye."
