Man's eye injured in attack

LOCAL police are searching for two men after they allegedly hurt a Phd student who thwarted their attempts to steal from a woman.

Zhao Xiaowei, a student at the School of Mechanical Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, suffered injuries to his left eye after being hit in the face by a man near the campus in Minhang District on Tuesday evening.

Zhao and a fellow student, Zhang Guoyu, witnessed a man stealing from a woman, who was riding a bicycle on Jianchuan Road, at about 6:10pm on Tuesday.

"The thief touched the woman and we saw that it caused her to drop something," said Zhang.

While confronting the thief, Zhao was attacked by an accomplice. He glasses were broken in the struggle and a piece of the lens damaged his eye.

After the assailants fled, Zhao was taken to a nearby hospital, where emergency surgery saved his eye, but has left him with impaired sight.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
