Marrow donor changes mind, sparks online debate

A Shanghai university student found herself in the epicenter of a national debate after she refused to donate her marrow to save the life of a young leukemia patient in neighboring Jiangsu Province even though she had signed for the donation.

The 23-year-old patient was already medicated in preparation for the marrow transplant but the donor's change of mind disrupted the original plan and put her life in great danger.

The incident sparked a heated debate on the Internet after media reported it today. Some people said a law is needed to prevent marrow donors from quitting at the last minute. But others argued that marrow donation should be voluntary and a donor has the right to change his or her mind.

Doctors are now trying a back-up solution to save the patient. Her blood-making system has been stopped to ready her for the transplant. The Shanghai student changed her mind when she was contacted by the hospital. Later she was persuaded to come and was hospitalized for surgery on March 4, but she changed her mind again, saying her parents were strongly opposed to her donation.
