Measures will bolster kids' fitness
THE increasing obesity and weakening physical condition of local students have prompted new government actions announced yesterday.
The city's sports bureau announced yesterday it would hire 100 professional sports coaches and retired athletes as sports teachers for local schools to improve the quality of physical education lessons.
Government subsidies to local sports gyms also will increase this year to allow them to provide more free or low-cost hours to the public, said the Shanghai Sports Bureau.
Another important measure is to reform the management of public sporting arenas and venues, Li Yuyi, director of the bureau, said yesterday.
"We are going to take back the rented-out sporting facilities and reopen them to the public at a low price or at no cost."
