Men held over stolen laptops
CITY police have detained a man who allegedly stole 13 laptops worth more than 60,000 yuan (US$8,784) from a joint-venture company in Huangpu District.
The suspect, Wang Zheng, aged in his 40s, allegedly sold the laptops to another man, surnamed Pang, who was also detained, for about 10,000 yuan.
Huangpu District police said Wang broke into the company office on the 29th floor of a building on Xizang Road M. about 7pm on August 25.
Wang, who wore gloves, left the building with the laptops in a cardboard box about 8:30pm, police said.
Wang was not questioned by security guards in the building as he left the scene.
Police tracked Wang via surveillance cameras in the building's office and targeted him as living in Zhabei District through the taxi that he took that night.
After combing five residential communities in the area, police nabbed Wang about 9:30pm on September 1.
Staff from the joint-venture firm said most of the sales reports from 2006 to 2008 were recorded on the stolen laptops.
"Without the laptops, our work came to a sudden stop," said one employee.
Their laptops would be returned by next Monday, police said.
Officers also said Wang was a repeat offender.
