Metro Line 8 extension running early


THE extension of Metro Line 8 will be in service as early as July when its second-phase construction nears completion, Metro officials said.

And construction work on Lines 7,9,and 11 is entering the final stage, officials told Xinmin Evening News. All four lines are scheduled to start service by the end of this year.

The second-phase of Line 8 is designed to cater for Pujiang Town, where residents from downtown have been relocated to make space for the World Expo site. Running 14 kilometers, the line connects Chengshan Road Station at the first-phase and ends at the Space Museum Station. It links with Lines 6 and 11 at Jiyang Road Station.

Currently Line 8 runs 22.4 kilometers from Wujiaochang area in the city's northeast Yangpu District to Yaohua Road in Pudong. It will be one of the main Metro lines for the Expo.

Officials said frame structure construction has been completed for the eight stations along the line, and the rail lines construction has been finished. The first test train ran on the line in January and the line will start trial operations in early July.

Work is going smoothly on the other lines under construction, officials said. Line 10, the east and west extension lines of Line 2, the north extension of Line 7 and the World Expo site extension of Line 13 will be finished next year and will be in service before May for the World Expo.
