Metro construction fire

A FIRE broke out at the construction site of a Metro station on Henan Road N. in Zhabei District yesterday afternoon. It resulted in a major traffic jam but there were no casualties.
The fire broke out 20 meters underground in the Tiantong Road Metro Station at 12:15pm and was brought under control in about 15 minutes, police said. The station is where Metro lines 10 and 12 will converge.
More than 10 fire engines rushed to the site and workers were evacuated safely.
Though the cause of the fire is still being investigated, reports suggest it may have been started by welding sparks.
On January 9, one worker died and six were seriously injured when they were stranded underground in a blaze that swept through a Metro Line 11 construction site in Putuo District.
On the same day, at a Metro construction site in Huangpu District, a 50-ton crane toppled over and crushed its operator, killing him.
Also yesterday, a fire broke out at noon in an underground restaurant in Chuanbo Mansion on Pudong Road S. in Pudong New Area, injuring three people.
Food was being cooked at a high temperature and this might have ignited grease on pipes in the kitchen. The fire was extinguished in about 20 minutes.
Three of the restaurant staff were burned and taken to hospital.
A woman has been treated for minor injuries and the cook and another worker remain in hospital under observation.
