Metro issues coupons to fire up shopping spree

RUSH-HOUR commuters can expect a pleasant surprise tomorrow to Saturday when they open a copy of Metro Express as the Metro operator will insert 100,000 discount coupons in the free paper for people to buy goods from stores inside the Metro stations.

The coupons can be used during the month-long Metro Shopping Festival, a Shanghai invention, which begins tomorrow.

More than half of the 300-plus stores at Metro stations will have sales during the festival. FamilyMart and 7-Eleven are among the 13 chain stores selected by the Metro management to take part in the holiday sales promotion.

"We expect this festival can benefit millions of Metro travelers and stimulate the business of Metro stores which are different from other retailors because they are mainly for the convenience of Metro riders," said an official with Shanghai Shentong Subway Assets Management Company.

The official said more vending machines and self-service payment terminals will be installed in Metro stations. Currently, there are 1,000 ATM banking machines and about 2,000 vending machines and self-service payment terminals in the subway system.
