Migrant life to greet China Pavilion visitors

CHINA'S vast migration from rural to urban areas over the past 30 years will be the theme for the first section of the China Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo.
A senior Expo official yesterday unveiled the exhibition plans at a press conference in the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination.
The pavilion will have a "core exhibition area" on the top story, an "experience area" on the second story and a "functional area" on the ground, said Chen Xianjin, deputy director general of the bureau.
The main exhibition area in the 63-meter China Pavilion will be its 30-meter upper section.
The Expo organizer said China's achievements in urban development from ancient to modern times will be the core theme of the China Pavilion. Some core philosophies of China's development, such as "constantly striving to become stronger" and "regard nature as the teacher" will be highlighted.
Visitors will first be taken to the top of the pavilion by lifts which will look like trains carrying China's migrant workers to urban towns, Chen said.
At the top visitors will see a film "The Migration of Hundreds of Millions" which will picture the past and present lives of the country's migrant workers.
The film will show Chinese experiences of large-scale migration, he said.
More than 300 million Chinese people have moved to cities from rural areas, an important step of the country's 30-year reform and opening to the outside world, he added.
Other exhibitions on the top floor, which will cover 16,000 square meters, will showcase the conditions of modern Chinese cities, the wisdom that the ancient Chinese used to tackle urban problems and China's future strategy for urban development. Paintings by children will illustrate the possible future look of cities.
The organizer will divide the exhibition into sections like the "Wisdom of History," the "Story of Spring" and the "Hope of Earth," Chen said, adding the organizer is still working on detailed plans.
The "experience area" will cover 8,000 square meters and will feature interactive games, inviting visitors to plan Chinese cities.
The "functional area" will exhibit new technologies that will contribute to a better life.
The organizer is polishing the exhibition plan and will publicize details late this year, Chen said.
Work on the exterior of the pavilion is due to be finished on July 25. Exhibition outfitting will begin on September 30 and be finished before the end of 2009.
More than 9 million people are expected to visit the China Pavilion. The 2010 event will attract a total of 70 million visitors.
