Migrant workers go home by chartered flights
Four planes chartered by a Shanghai company flew from the Hongqiao airport today to send the company's 241 migrant workers to their homes in remote Shaanxi and Gansu provinces.
Lanpec Equipment Company in Jinshan District leased these planes. "Many of our workers failed to go home in the past few years. The company arranged these flights to thank them for their contributions," said Li Xuyang, a company official.
Some volunteers prepared breakfast for these migrant workers and helped to carry their luggage to the two buses that took them to the Hongqiao International Airport early this morning.
"I was so excited and couldn't fall asleep last night because I finally have a chance for family reunion dinner on the eve of the Chinese New Year," said Yao Junhui, a 23-year-old worker from Tianshui, Gansu Province.
The four flights departed at 8am, 9am, 2pm and 3pm today.
The free trip was also made possible with efforts from the city government, Xinmin Evening News, China Eastern Airlines, and Shanghai Bus Group.
"Migrant workers have worked hard the whole year for the prosperity and development of this city. We should do something in return," said Chen Zhenmin, deputy director of the Municipal Office for Promoting Ethical Progress.
