'Mines' cause stir but are only fireworks

THE 100-plus "unexploded land mines" found by police yesterday in a Minhang District river, which caused panic among people living or working nearby, were determined to be disabled fireworks, police said yesterday.

Police at first announced on their official microblog on Weibo.com at 11:30am that they had found "land mines" in a river at No. 200 Minbei Road in Minhang District and their preliminary investigation showed that the mines were "historical remains."

Police cordoned off the area near the river and said they were working with firefighters to handle the mines, and they warned local residents to stay away from the scene.

That sparked immediate panic among some residents living or working near the river in Minhang's Huacao Town as they feared that the mines might explode, and they wondered whether there were other mines not yet detected.

After experts arrived on the scene about 20 minutes later, police announced that the "mines" were actually disabled fireworks that looked like mines.

The police said they will remove the 100-plus fireworks from the river course and destroy them. They are investigating where the fireworks came from.
