Mob smashes new restaurant that is seen as rival

A small restaurant ready to open in the city's Hongkou District was sabotaged yesterday by a mob of about 30 people, the local Youth Daily reported today.

The gang broke into the unidentified restaurant on Daming Road E. around 5pm yesterday. Armed with hammers and sticks, they held a couple who own the restaurant down to the ground and started the wrecking, the paper said.

The gang fled immediately after they smashed the newly decorated restaurant into smithereens, the report said.

A witness who lived next door told the Youth Daily that more than 30 people took part in the smashing. "They looked quite professional. They didn't beat anyone in the restaurant but just destroyed things like glass doors, chairs and tables," said the unnamed witness.

The couple suffered light injuries and were sent to hospital immediately.

People close to the couple said the gang was hired by a nearby restaurant which regarded the newcomer as a competitor for offering the same cuisine.

Police have started to probe into the case.
