Mother, daughter-in-law lash out with hammer, both injured

LONG-TIME enmity between a woman and her daughter-in-law erupted this morning and the two attacked each other with hammers in their apartment in downtown Shanghai with both ended up seriously wounded.

The daughter-in-law, surnamed Chen, is five months pregnant and is in danger of losing her baby, doctors at the Zhongshan Hospital said.

The young woman cried in front of the camera of a local TV news reporter, her face bruised and bloody and her head was bandaged after emergency treatment.

Her mother-in-law, surnamed Hu, said she also got hammered but the young woman denied and told police Hu hit herself with the hammer to make false accusation.

Chen's husband said his mother did not like his wife and the two women held a grudge against each other for a long time.

Police are now investigating this rare case of family dispute.
