Motorcyclist accused of injuring Shanghai traffic cop

A motorcyclist has been arrested and charged with injuring a traffic cop on a downtown elevated road in January while trying to avoid a police check, prosecutors said today.

Motorbikes are banned on the city’s elevated roads. Patrol police spotted three motorcycles, including the suspect, on Yan'an Elevated Road. Police said they were driving at about 100 kph.

A traffic cop asked them to pull over for a check, but all three motorbikes went speeding past the checkpoint.

Another police officer further down the road then tried to intercept the motorbikes. But the suspect's girlfriend, who was on the back of the motorcycle, jumped off the two-wheeler as they slowed down and grabbed the cop's arms. Two of the drivers fled, including the suspect.

The suspect was eventually stopped by another police officer, surnamed Zhang. But when the suspect was again told to stop, he sped up and hit Zhang’s motorbike. The traffic cop’s left foot was injured in the collision. There was also minor damage to Zhang’s motorbike and a nearby taxi.

The suspect allegedly confessed later that he didn’t have a motorcycle driver’s license.

Prosecutors said his girlfriend was given a 10-day administrative detention. They did not provide any details about the other two motorbike drivers involved in the case.
