Motorists face overdue fines
Motorists who have failed to pay their traffic tickets on time after October 10 will face a daily overdue fee of 3 percent of the original fine, Shanghai traffic police said yesterday.
According to China’s traffic law, a motorist who receives a ticket has 15 days to acknowledge receipt and settle the fine. Many people ignore this rule and let unpaid tickets pile up. The law already stipulates the overdue fee, but it has never been enforced. On October 10, additional penalty fees will be added from the first day after the 15-day period expires, but late fees shall not exceed the original penalty sum, according to the law. Police launched a campaign earlier this month against such errant drivers.
