Museum restores rare bronze jian
THE restoration of a rare 2,000 year-old bronze jian (water vessel) has been completed after 15 years of delicate work at the Shanghai Museum.
Bronze jians were popular during the Spring and Autumn period (770-476 BC). The piece was used to store water and ice for bathing and features an intertwining dragon pattern. There are 12 steps in the process of bronze restoration, varying from cleaning, disassembling, de-rusting, reshaping, welding, molding to casting, carving, repairing flaws and polishing.
