Mysterious signs attributed to thieves
MORE than 30 families in an old neighborhood in the city's Hongkou District found their doors marked with strange signs and believed they were left by thieves.
Residents in Lane 24 and Lane 50 on Changyang Road suspected thieves drew the signs to inform their partners of each household situation, the Oriental Morning Post reported today.
A pair of brackets may indicate someone is in the room; a circle means the opposite, but a circle with a dot in the middle may suggest the door isn't locked; and the Chinese word for door probably warns there is a dog inside, they guessed.
The signs were drawn with black marker pens on doors or walls in the alley. Most households have wiped off the signs but some are unaware of these, the paper said.
Police said they haven't deciphered these signs and community officials said no theft was reported recently, the paper said.
