Nature in the spotlight as city gears up for festival

The Shanghai International Nature Conservation Festival will be launched on Saturday, featuring lectures, environment-protection activities, nature experiences, photo exhibitions and film screening, officials said yesterday.

The event, in its fifth year, aims to raise awareness about nature and environment protection.

Seventeen experts and scholars from home and abroad will share their experiences on nature conservation at the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum on Saturday.

The topics include the role of science education in nature protection, promotion of natural landscapes in cities, research and industrial challenges of the ocean ecological system, rescuing species and garbage sorting.

Experts from China, the United States, Canada, Italy, Benin and Russia have good expertise and experience in nature conservation, said Ji Xiaoye, director of the organizing committee of the festival.

A roundtable conference will be held on Chongming Island on Sunday with topics such as recycling and the role of the construction of green ecological system in city鈥檚 sustainable development.

How to make Chongming a world-class ecological island via the 2021 China Flower Expo will be a highlight of the roundtable meeting, said Ji.

A number of ecology-related activities will be held during the festival. On the agenda are a photo exhibition, garbage-sorting games and eco-friendly DIY in Changning District, plant science lectures and fruit and vegetable picking at Chenshan Botanical Garden, a shade plant exhibition at Shanghai Botanical Garden, an African animal picture exhibition and a butterfly exhibition at Shanghai Zoo, and the China chrysanthemum expo at Gongqing Forest Park.

A special exhibition featuring the sounds of insects recorded by the public will be held at the Shanghai Natural History Museum and more than 20 nature-related films and documentaries will be screened during the festival which runs through October 25.
