Negligence the cause of autoclave blast
THE explosion of a steam autoclave which damaged a nearby section of Metro Line 9 on November 7 in Songjiang District was caused by workers' improper handling, the Shanghai Work Safety Administration said yesterday.
The workers failed to check whether the autoclave lid was fastened before injecting steam, causing the lid to shoot out of their workshop, said an investigation report from the administration.
The lid crashed into a pillar of the elevated track of Metro Line 9, about 100 meters north of the factory.
The piece, weighing about two tons, caused severe damage to the pillar and the operation of Line 9 was severely affected though the emergency repair finished three days after the accident.
Five workers were injured in the accident. One suffered severe burns; another was injured in his head, chest and arms. Whether they have recovered is not known yet.
