Neighbor's wife sold for 300 yuan
A MAN who abducted his mentally retarded neighbor and sold her to his cousin was jailed for seven years yesterday.
The neighbor was two months pregnant when she was rescued, Baoshan District People's Court heard.
Shi Yizhong, 44, a Jiangsu Province native, and his wife rented an apartment in Baoshan District in early 2003. Their neighbors were a couple from Anhui Province.
Because the neighbor's wife, Bian, was of low intelligence, Shi managed to trick her into going with him on a trip to his hometown, a village in Jiangsu's Huai'an City, while her husband was at work.
When they got to the village, Bian realized what was happening and tried to get away. But Shi beat her and tied her up, the court heard.
Shi's cousin, Xing, who was too poor to get married, made an offer of 300 yuan (US$44) for her, the court heard.
Meanwhile, Bian's husband, Wang, was looking for his wife everywhere.
He began to suspect Shi as he had been away from Shanghai for some time.
Shi denied having seen her but Wang didn't give up the search. About a year later he found out the address of Shi's hometown and decided to go there to search as he still had suspicions that Shi hadn't been telling him the truth.
When police found Bian she was two months pregnant.
Shi, learning the news in Shanghai from relatives, escaped and wasn't caught until April last year.
He told the court that Bian had asked him to find her a new husband because her husband always beat her. So he took her to his hometown to marry his cousin.
But his story failed to convince the court and wasn't backed up by Xing or any of the other witnesses.
