New Green-Fuel Buses Slated For City's Transport System

A fleet of buses with a very high emissions-standard is expected to begin running on the No. 147 bus route by mid-March, said a local bus operator.

Ten of the new buses, powered by dimethyl ether - an organic compound and a clean-burning hydrocarbon fuel ?? will go into operation on the route connecting Jiangxi Road N. in Hongkou District and the Shanghai Diesel Engine Co in Yangpu District. The busses have emissions rated Euro III.

Dimethyl ether, a nontoxic fuel, has already been used in the provinces of Shandong, Sichuan, Shaanxi, Yunnan and Anhui as well as Chongqing Municipality.

Five super-capacitor-powered buses will also be put into use on the No. 26 route by July. This route links Shanghai's Xuhui District and Huangpu District.

Super-capacitor-powered buses produce hardly any emissions and can restore up to 40 percent of their own electricity through regenerative breaking and other energy-recycling measures.

They first went into use in Shanghai in summer 2006 on the No. 11 route.

Buses powered by super capacitors can be charged at bus stops. Each charge takes only about 30 seconds and can power a super-capacitor bus for around 8 kilometers.
