New cars must use cleaner fuel

FROM Sunday licenses will not be issued to new cars in Shanghai that can't use the cleaner fuel that meets the national IV standard.

The traffic police yesterday alerted owners of vehicles that can't use the fuel will have to get licensed by Sunday to use III standard fuel, today's Shanghai Morning Post reported.

The national IV standard fuel has been introduced because it is low in sulphur and will help improve the air quality, according to Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau.

Vehicle emissions have become a major source of pollution in Shanghai, the authority said.

The bureau has posted on its Website a list of more than 3,000 vehicle models that use the national IV fuel.

The Shanghai IV standard fuel will start being sold at the city's 800-plus gas stations next month, when sales of the cheaper but more polluting No. 90 fuel will cease. No. 93 and No. 97, which meet the III standard, will continue to be sold.
