New flights connect city with Perth
The first direct flight from Shanghai to Perth is due to land this morning in a trial operation for the Chinese New Year travel rush.
The nine-hour China Eastern Airlines service will operate each Monday, Wednesday and Friday until February 17.
鈥淥ngoing direct flights between Shanghai and Perth would open up a massive new visitor market,鈥 Western Australia鈥檚 Tourism Minister, Paul Papalia, said in Shanghai on Monday.
鈥淲e want this trial service to become a permanent connection between the two cities and we are in ongoing talks. Direct flights from key markets such as China are critical to growing the state鈥檚 tourism industry.鈥
Perth will host a massive Chinese New Year Festival, with celebrations and performances, Papalia told a tourism forum.
Tour operators are also preparing to receive Chinese visitors who want to get away from cities and out into the outback.
