New memories and old, riding ‘sightseeing line’

Fengxian residents relocated to make way for the south extension of Metro Line 5 were invited to ride on the first subway line in the district yesterday.

The line will open to public around the end of the year.

The first batch of 30 residents rode between Xidu, an old ferry port on the Huangpu River, and Fengxian Xincheng, a subcenter in the city’s far south. Another 200 residents have been invited to take the Metro today and tomorrow.

“We have been waiting for over 12 years for a subway to take us downtown,” said Lu Jinlong, a senior resident in the Jinhai community. As one of the invitees, Lu arrived at Xiaotang Station near where he once lived with a selfie stick around 8am.

Cao Jie, another resident relocated from close to the station eight years ago, took his 2-year-old grandson on the trip. It was the first time either of them had ridden the Metro.

“It used to take nearly two hours with multiple transfers between buses to get downtown from Xiaotang,” said Cao. “The bus fare also costs over 10 yuan (US$1.45),” he added.

The new line shortens the travel time between Fengxian and downtown to roughly an hour, said Qu Jianping, chairman of the state-owned Fengxian Traffic & Energy Group, which took charge of construction of the new line in 2014.

The extension is the first Metro line to cross over, rather than under, the Huangpu River via Minpu No. 2 Bridge. Already known as the “sightseeing line,” apart from the riverside scenery, passengers can view the attractions of Fengxian such as the Oriental Beauty Valley and the district’s forest parks, Qu said.

The extension starts at Dongchuan Road Station and ends at Fengxian Xincheng Station, covering 19.5 kilometers with nine stops. Most of the line and seven stops are in Fengxian.

When the extension opens, Line 5 trains will split at Dongchuan Road, with a branch to Minhang Development Zone and the main route going to Fengxian Xincheng.

Noise reduction technology has been used on the extension. Stations will also have a rural feel and feature examples of local craftsmanship.

The district government has set aside land around each station to develop transport hubs, parking lots and commercial facilities, said Wang Xiaohan, Fengxian’s deputy Party secretary.
