New team of volunteers set to begin work today

THE latest batch of Expo volunteers, who will serve during the hottest part of the summer, will take their posts this morning.
Nearly 8,000 students, including 12 foreign students, from Shanghai University will serve inside and outside the Expo site from today through the end of July. This is the biggest number of volunteers from one university.
"To prepare for the physical challenge, the university students and teachers have jogged 2 kilometers every evening for one month," said Li Yin, an official of the school's Youth League.
The school has also equipped each student with sunscreen to prevent sunstroke. Meanwhile, the school hospital will be open 24/7 in case a volunteer becomes sick.
Thus far, four teams of volunteers, or 22,500 people, have finished their work. Their combined working time amounts to 2.8 million hours.
A "handover ceremony" between the fourth and fifth teams was held inside the Expo site yesterday.
New volunteers asked those who had already served for advice yesterday so that they could perform their duties well on their first work day.
Among the fourth team of volunteers, about 50 seniors from East China University of Political Science and Law had a special graduation ceremony at the Expo site.
They missed their own graduation ceremony due to their volunteer work, but many said they would forever remember this special graduation.
"A graduation ceremony inside the Expo site is a once in a lifetime chance," said Ji Xiaojun, one of the graduate volunteers from the university.
"It has been an honor to work as a volunteer."
