New tickets work well

The new reservation system for the China Pavilion worked well on its first day of operation, with ticket holders passing through the gate with newly installed scanning machines without any problems.

A volunteer surnamed Huang said the new tickets and machines had no impact on the speed of people entering the pavilion.

The new system was adopted in an effort to thwart scalpers. The plastic reservation ticket is now embedded with anti-counterfeiting chips.

Previously, the ticket was a simple slip of paper that the organizer said scalpers had been able to forge perfectly.

However, ticket scalpers did not seem to be deterred and continued to hang around the pavilion yesterday.

A scalper carrying an umbrella to cover himself tried to sell a ticket to this Shanghai Daily reporter for 200 yuan (US$29.54). He said the ticket was genuine as his friends came to the site at 3am to queue for it.

Others were lingering around the pavilion, and they regularly approached people, murmuring, "Do you want a China Pavilion ticket?"

Song Laixin, spokesman of the Visitors Service Center, said they felt somewhat helpless about ticket scalping, but they would continue to try and stop it.

The reporter witnessed a scalper being caught by a plainclothes policeman at the pavilion entrance when he was trying to sell reservation tickets to others.

The police took him away after finding three tickets in his pocket.

The new ticket is a thin plastic card. It gives a one-hour window for visitors to enter.

The tickets have different colors for morning, afternoon and night to make it more difficult to counterfeit. The colors are changed each day.

Staff workers stand beside each ticket machine, similar to those on city buses, to help visitors use the tickets and recycle them.

The tickets will be disinfected once each week.

The tickets are only valid on the day they are issued.

Song reminded visitors not to buy reservation tickets from scalpers because they might sell an expired ticket.
