New website to promote the role of guide dogs

SHANGHAI has opened a website today to facilitate the application for a guide dog as there are about 160,000 registered blind residents in the city.

The city currently has only 14 professionally-trained guide dogs and the government wants to introduce a guide dog training program to meet the growing demand for guide dogs.

The website, www.shguidedogs.com, would also draw public attention to the important role of these canine guides for the blind people. Shanghai enacted a new canine law in May, which allows guide dogs, for the first time, to access public venues and transport vehicles.

Due to little publicity about the guide dogs, blind people are frequently denied boarding by drivers or fellow passengers who consider the dogs are pets and are banned in public places.

The official website also opened a channel for people to make donations for guide dogs or for the city's dog-training program.
