Nike shoes fail quality inspections

SHOES made by Nike and Me&City failed inspections of the city's quality watchdog for excessive formaldehyde and thickness of soles, authorities said yesterday.

Shoes for men produced in February by Meters/bonwe, which owns the brand of Me&City, were found to have serious quality problems for containing excessive formaldehyde in the shoe pad, which should be at or below 150 mg/kg, the Shanghai Quality and Technical Supervision Bureau said.

Excessive formaldehyde can cause headaches, dermatitis, eczema and, in large quantities, malignant tumors and leukemia.

Women's sports shoes by Nike made in July of last year had thinner soles than required, officials said.
