Ningbo to host weekend forum
The Information and Communication Technology and Urban Development Forum, the first official forum of the World Expo, would be held in Ningbo, in neighboring Zhejiang Province, next weekend, the organizer said yesterday.
More than 600 people, leaders from government bureaus, research institutions and enterprises, are expected to attend the forum.
The speakers will include Jiang Mianheng, vice director of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, International Telecommunication Union Secretary-General Hamadoun Toure and the chairmen of both China Mobile and Tencent, according to the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination.
The forum, which will last for a day and a half and kicks off on Saturday, will cover information and communication technology and their practical application for city development.
"A modern city can't develop without IT adoption and that's the reason why we will start the forum with that topic," said Zhu Yonglei, vice director of the Expo bureau.
Six planned forums have the themes ICT and Urban Development; Cultural Heritage and Urban Regeneration; Science and Technological Innovation and Urban Future; Towards a Low-Carbon City: Environmental Protection and Urban Responsibilities; Economic Transformations; and Urban-Rural Relations and Harmonious City and Livable Life.
A final summit forum will be held in October.
A "Shanghai Declaration" will be announced at the summit forum, which will be a significant document of the World Expo, based on participants' understanding of global urban development.
