Norovirus infection confirmed as 52 pupils, 2 teachers fell sick at local school, causing partial class suspension
A local primary school in Putuo District suspended its classes today for all 240 first graders at one campus after 52 of them and two teachers caught acute gastroenteritis after being affected by Norovirus.
“All the students and teachers are in stable condition and we almost ruled out possibility of poisoning caused by food in the school,” Sun Naxin, headmaster of the Wuning Road Primary School, told Shanghai Daily.
“At present, we suspect that their sickness was caused by virus from one student who went to a wedding feast on Sunday as she was the first to show the symptoms, while some other guests on the banquet also had fever and vomited,” she added.
The incident happened at the school’s First Wuning Village Campus, which hosts only 535 first and second graders, with the first student at Class 6 of Grade One vomiting once in her own classroom and another time in a music classroom on Tuesday. Her parents took her home earlier in the afternoon and asked for sick leave for her in the following days.
Four of her classmates also had fever and vomited on Wednesday afternoon and a total of 51 students and two music teachers reported the symptoms by Thursday morning, which prompted the school’s decision to suspend classes for first graders.
“Twenty of the sick children are classmates of the first sick students and more than 10 from the neighboring Class 7,” Sun said, “The far the classroom is away from Class 6, the fewer sick students the class has.”
“Only first graders with their classrooms on the same floor reported sickness, while students of other grades, who had taken same food with them are well,” she added, “Meanwhile, teachers have different food from students, but we also have two of them fell sick. So we almost ruled out the possibility of poisoning caused by food in our school.”
But food and drug administration staff were still called to collect samples of food the students had taken in the previous days to carry out tests and find out the truth, Sun said.
The school disinfected the whole campus today and required students to wash their hands with disinfectant before entering.
Students of two classes of Grade One were told to stay at home in the morning and the suspension was expanded to the five other classes in the afternoon.
Both first and second graders on the campus will suspend classes tomorrow to prevent expanded infection and the school will decide whether to prolong the suspension after the weekend according to health condition of students.
Norovirus is a virus which is a common cause of gastroenteritis, with an incubation period between 12 to 72 hours. People affected the virus usually suffer from fever, vomiting and diarrhea while most children have vomiting instead of diarrhea. Every year between October and March is the high-incidence season for Norovirus.
