Number of visitors tops 10m
THE total number of visitors to the Expo since its official opening on May 1 hit the 10 million mark yesterday morning on a day that saw more than 510,000 visitors in the park by 8pm.
Due to safety concerns, Expo organizers yesterday decided to cancel Japanese band SMAP's Expo concert, which was due to take place on June 13.
The news of SMAP's concert had excited its many fans and the event was widely reported.
But a spokesman for the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination said that, given the rapid increase in visitor numbers, the bureau had decided to cancel the concert for safety reasons.
The news comes about a week after a Super Junior concert on May 30 caused overnight queues at the Expo site and fans rushing to get tickets. Some girls were said to have fainted in the crowd.
Rumors that two people had been killed and many injured in a stampede were dismissed by Hong Hao, director general of the coordination bureau.
