Office building parts collapse, blocks traffic
THE top two stories of a downtown office building collapsed early this morning, causing no injuries but falling bricks and wood to block the traffic in the Bund area.
The eight-story building, the Sichuan Building at the crossroad of Yan'an Road E. and Sichuan Road M., saw its top structures at the seventh- and eighth-floor collapsed about 3am today.
Residents nearby were evacuated soon after for safety concerns, city government said.
The damaged building was then undergoing an interior decoration when the accident happened, according to Huangpu District government. City police and work safety authorities are probing into the cause.
Major roads nearby, like Yan'an Road and Sichuan Road, were closed to traffic now. A ramp of the underground Bund passage tunnel is also closed, said city traffic authorities.
The nearby traffic is expected to resume before this night, according to the government.
