Old and young rescued from fires
A FIVE-year-old boy, left locked in at home alone, was saved from a burning apartment yesterday, after rescuers forced their way in and carried him out.
Although the boy suffered burns to his face and legs, he was reported to be in stable condition yesterday.
In a separate incident, an 81-year-old woman trapped in a burning room early yesterday morning was saved by neighbor.
About 9am, after the boy's grandfather went out for groceries, smoke was spotted billowing from their second-floor home in Putuo District, alerting three neighbors and a property management company worker.
Yang Zixiong, a 53-year-old, who participated in the rescue, told Shanghai Daily yesterday that a young neighbor, wearing a wet towel over his face, crawled into the apartment and rescued the boy.
Yang downplayed his own role in the incident: "I only helped with the door, and that wasn't a big deal," he said.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
An elderly woman, surnamed Zhuang, who lived alone on the top of a three-story building in downtown Huangpu District also had a lucky escape after being rescued when her home caught fire around 3am yesterday.
She was using the bathroom when she saw the flames and called for help, according to Liu Yaqin, a witness who lived below. Liu's husband, Wei Wanhong, rushed into the burning room and helped the old lady out.
"We feel grateful to what our neighbors did; they saved her life," said Wu Minxiong, Zhuang's son-in-law.
