Old buildings installed with fire equipment

SHANGHAI has installed or upgraded fire equipment in 726 buildings that are more than 20 years old, local public security officials said.

The new fire equipment cost about 250 million yuan (US$40 million) and can benefit tens of thousands of families, they said.

Early this year, a project was approved to add fire equipment to 700 old high-rises and erect 1,500 fire hydrants in old neighborhoods to improve their fire-fighting ability.

Vice Mayor Zhang Xuebin visited some residential areas in Huangpu and Xuhui districts yesterday to check the project's progress. He said property management companies should teach residents to use the new firefighting equipment.
