Only Beijing's airport more tardy than Pudong, says survey

SHANGHAI'S Pudong International Airport is the second tardiest in the world, with a flight punctuality rate of less than 30 percent, according to an industry survey.

Beijing's airport ranked last.

Only 28.7 percent flights took off and landed at Pudong on time in the first half of the year, US-based aviation data provider FlightStats said.

Beijing Capital International Airport was the world's worst among 35 airports surveyed, with a punctuality rate of just 18.3 percent. FlightStats counts a delay if an aircraft fails to take off within 15 minutes of schedule.

The survey said that the rates at China's two busiest airports compared with a world average of 69.2 percent between January and June.

In the past week, bad weather caused massive delays on the Shanghai-Beijing service, the country's busiest route.

Chinese passengers have long been complaining about poor timekeeping on domestic flights.

Last year, the average punctuality rate of the 35 airports dropped to its lowest in five years at 74.8 percent, the Civil Aviation Administration of China has said.
