Over 500 officials punished in 2010

THIS year, more than 500 local officials had been punished, administratively or criminally, by the end of October for corruption or other illegal activities, local authorities -announced yesterday.

A total of 505 officials received punishment in 534 cases, with 37 being prosecuted, including three bureau directors - Jiao Zichun, Shi Qiubo and Tao Xiaoxing - and more than 32 million yuan (US$4.85 million) in illicit earnings was recovered.

Last month, Jiao, the former chairman of state-owned Changjiang Computer Group, was sentenced to 17 years in prison for taking over 2 million yuan in bribes and embezzling 1.48 million yuan.

Shi, the former deputy director of the Shanghai Justice Bureau, went on trial in May for taking about 1.9 million yuan in bribes.

Tao, the former vice director of the Shanghai Housing, Land and Resources Administrative Bureau, was arrested for taking bribes in November.

In 2009, 821 officials involved in 867 reported cases were punished in Shanghai. About 396 million yuan in illegal earnings was recovered.
