Panda trio admit adding melamine to milk

THREE executives of Shanghai Panda Dairy confessed to producing and selling products tainted with melamine at a second trial yesterday at Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People's Court.

They were each jailed for between three and 4 1/2 years by Fengxian District People's Court during their first trial on March 3. They were also fined from 200,000 yuan (US$29,300) to 400,000 yuan, today's Legal Daily reported.

They appealed against the length of the sentence in the second trial.

A Panda retailer in Jinjiang City, Fujian Province, requested a refund for 1,300 tainted Panda condensed milk products in October 2008, when the nation's melamine milk powder scandal was center stage.

Wang Yuechao, Panda's legal representative, Hong Qide, former general manager, and Chen Dehua, former deputy general manager, hatched a plan to reuse the returned condensed milk in other products to save costs, the court was told.
