Paper bowls to cut waste
MORE than 700,000 eco-friendly paper bowls that meet the city’s first standard on the packaging of take-away and online delivery food will be used at the National Exhibition and Convention Center during the First China International Import Expo, which kicks off on November 5.
The standard, released by the city’s quality watchdog, requires the use of eco-friendly paper bowls instead of plastic boxes, and bio-degradable sacks instead of traditional plastic bags. It also covers such issues as hygiene, strength and permeability of the material, storage and transportation.
Some 180,000 of the paper bowls have already been delivered to the convention center from online food delivery platform Ele.me.
The new standard, a first in China, was implemented by platforms such as Ele.me, Meituan and Baidu Waimai in Putuo and Changning districts as well as the Pudong New Area in June on a trial basis.
It will be gradually promoted citywide, according to authorities.
It is estimated that average daily food delivery orders total 1.65 million in Shanghai.
The number of discarded plastic boxes from these deliveries surpasses 1.2 billion per year, totaling 45,000 tons, according to the Shanghai Quality and Technical Supervision Bureau. More than 75 percent of plastic garbage from online food delivery is expected to be cut if the standard is fully implemented.
