Parents donate boy's corneas

THE parents of a boy who died at 8:40pm yesterday after battling heart disease carried out their wishes that the boy's corneas be donated.

The half-hour operation to harvest Rao Libin's corneas was completed at 11:30pm. Shanghai Red Cross and Shanghai Eye Bank received the corneas.

Rao, 11, from Jiangxi Province, collapsed from heart disease on May 29 and was transferred to Shanghai Children's Medical Center on June 2.

Doctors said he was not expected to survive without a heart transplant. Due to the extreme shortage of donated organs in China, the chance of his getting a heart in time was slim to none.

The boy's parents decided before he died yesterday to donate his corneas, an act that remains relatively rare.

There were only 10 successful cornea donations last year, while hundreds of blind patients are on a waiting list.
