Parking lot turned into a hub of design and innovation
THE third phase of the No. 1 Design Field, a modern design and innovation center built on a parking lot on Siping Road, Yangpu District, went into construction today.
The third phase development will include a design museum, an exhibition hall, and the Sino-Italian Design & Innovation Center. The construction is expected to be completed in three years.
The first phase of the project, which utilized a three-level bus parking garage, was completed in April. Tongji University's Architectural Design and Research Institute has moved in along with thousands of students.
The second phase development, involving the renovation of a bus repair workshop, will be completed in July next year. Tongji University architects who designed the Urban Best Practices Area for Expo 2010 are responsible for its renovation and conversion.
The No. 1 Design Field is a major project to promote knowledge-based economy around Tongji University, which stood at 15 billion yuan (US$2.32 billion) in revenue last year, up 22 percent from 2009.
Backed by the Yangpu District government, knowledge-based economy in the area is expected to yield 30 billion yuan by 2015.
