Pedestrian hit by falling glass

A SHEET of glass fell from the Siemens office building in Yangpu District yesterday, injuring a 58-year-old woman.

The incident happened about 5:40pm when the 1.5-square-meter tempered glass sheet snapped and fell from the 10th floor of the building on Dalian Road, striking a passer-by surnamed Xu.

Xu bled from her face and arm after being hit by the glass fragment.

"I could not run fast and was hit," said Xu, who was waiting to take a bus.

Staff members of BE.S.T Shanghai branch, the property management company of the building, said the scorching temperatures was probably the reason why the glass sheet snapped.

The company said it would check the tempered glass of the building to avoid further accidents and was dealing with the aftermath of the incident.

Investigation into the incident is underway.

In 2011, glasses fell from the One Lujiazui Business Center in Lujiazui twice and damaged dozens of cars parked below.
