Pet animal puts traveler on train back to HK
Two foreigners arriving from Hong Kong by train and carrying a pet hamster were stopped by Shanghai quarantine officials yesterday. One of them had to take the hamster back to Hong Kong.
They are a couple from Argentina and they work in Shanghai. The quarantine officials found the small animal in their bag as they were checked at the customs yesterday morning.
The couple was told that they either have to take their pet back to Hong Kong or eliminate it under the Chinese rules. So the man took another train back to Hong Kong.
An increasing number of foreign passengers have been found to take pet animals into China in recent years, according to the Shanghai Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau.
Chinese law forbids passengers to take animals, except dogs and cats, into the territory. Dog and cat owners are required to show quarantine certificates from exporting countries. Moreover, each passenger can take only one dog or cat with them.
