Plane runs out of runway at Hongqiao

A China Eastern Airlines' regional jet ran out of the runway when landing at the Hongqiao International Airport in heavy rain in the afternoon. No passenger has been reported injured so far.

The ERJ145 jet of Flight MU2947 from Huai'an in east Jiangsu Province to Shanghai failed to land with its major undercarriages. It touched the ground with the front undercarriage instead, which was broken immediately.

The Embraer jet with 50 seats then ran out of the runway at around 5:30pm.

Its tail has been trapped in the nearby grassland. The broken front undercarriage left deep traces on the concrete runway, according to pictures taken by passengers onboard.

The airport authority then temporary closed the runway.

"I was totally freaked out because all the passengers were almost killed," Li Jun, one of the passengers said.

Fire trucks and ambulances were seen lining up on the scene, according to photos uploaded by witnesses online.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
