Planetarium plan
CONSTRUCTION will start next year on a planetarium theme park in the seaside Lingang area, officials said yesterday. Admission will be free when the park, estimated to cost between 600 million yuan (US$95 million) and 700 million yuan, opens in 2017.
The park will have an outdoor display of ancient astronomical observation equipment and camping areas to allow people to more easily see stars at night, officials said. It is expected to excite science buffs that have been disappointed at the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory on Sheshan Hill, which has a small museum. "It is great for Shanghai to have a planetarium, which can help cultivate scientific education professionals and boost public interest in astronomy," said Tang Haiming, an official at the astronomical observatory.
