Police bust bank card forgery gang, nabbing 16
SHANGHAI police said today they have busted a fraud gang and detained 16 suspects for forging credit cards with stolen information.
Economic crime detectives at the Shanghai Public Security Bureau said they were tipped off in October last year. "A card holder was found shopping in America and in Shanghai at the same time. Something must be wrong," said Dai Xinfu, a director of Economic Crime Investigation Division. "The man's information had been stolen by the gang to make a duplicate card."
After a month of investigation, the police seized the suspects in a joint action in Shanghai, Guangdong, Fujian and Shandong on November 21 and uncovered more than 300 fake credit cards, numerous card-making machines and a huge amount of card holder information. The gang was led by a man surnamed Luo.
"Most of the confiscated bank cards are American credit cards such as American Express and they can be used without a password," Dai said. "The suspects would use these cards to buy luxury products and then sell them for cash."
Dai said the legitimate card holders leaked their personal information while shopping online. Police are still hunting some gang members who are outside of China.
Shanghai police launched a crackdown on bank card-related crimes last month and have detained more than 100 suspects.
